Alright guys! I haven’t had many updates for you on the bonus room other than our new furniture, but that is all changing now! Week 5 of the One Room Challenge and I feel like I’m actually getting started. I finalllllyyyyy got some of the product in I’ve been waiting for so I can get started on some of the larger DIY projects in there. Now I’m on a roll! This week I tackled the Stikwood ceiling and also installed all the new lighting. Let’s take a peek at this moody space!
Charcoal Plank Ceiling
Tada! The Stikwood plank ceiling is officially done! I’ll share a full tutorial later, but I wanted to give you a full update on the current status of the space.
My dream of this dark and moody movie room is coming together. If you need a refresher, here is my inspiration board for this room. It will double as a movie/bonus room and also the kids’ home school space. It has such a different vibe already and with each new item I see the vision coming together.
Before Pic
Here is what this angle of the room looked like before. I had already painted the walls Rebel by Kilz a few years ago, but never fully completed the space. It’s pretty much served as a TV room/toy dump room. Now that’s all about to change.
I knew I wanted to do a dark ceiling in here, but I wanted something more than just paint. I also wanted to add some texture and dimension to the room. I was so excited when Stikwood wanted to partner on this project because it is literally EXACTLY what I needed in here! The ceiling is about 310 sq ft and it took me about 10 hours to install. It was tedious, but I also did it completely on my own. So if you had a buddy it would go by a lot faster.
A darker ceiling definitely makes the space feel a little smaller, it “brings down the ceiling” a lot. Our ceilings are 8ft up here but if we had shorter ones I probably wouldn’t go this route. However, I LOVE it! Once I put the new chandelier up, it brought about this new moody glow to the room and it made it feel so much cozier.
Mid-Century Modern Lighting
Speaking of the new lighting, I went with this mid-century modern chandelier, it is stunning in person! It also comes in a smaller version too.
I also installed the new plug-in wall sconces. These will go on either side of the leather chaise and directly above the side tables.
I have one other area I added lights to, but it was too dark out to take pics, so I’ll update you on that later!
I am going really bold with this space and taking a lot of risks. It is definitely going to be a mid-century modern moody space with a classic twist. Stick with me until the end on this one, it will all come together!
