When I started redecorating our outdoor spaces, I wanted each space to have its own unique style, but I also wanted everything to blend seamlessly together. Last year, my main focus was decorating all of our outdoor spaces so we could jump right into entertaining and making people feel welcome in our home. Today, I’m giving you a full tour of all our neutral outdoor spaces and showing you how they all work together.
By sticking to a similar style and color palette, I have managed to create multiple areas in my backyard that feel totally unique yet still capture my neutral modern transitional decorating style. The trick is to stick to a coordinating color palette and choose items that could potential work in any of the spaces. If you know you can move pieces around to all the spaces and keep the same style, then you know you are on the right track.
Neutral Outdoor Fireplace Seating Area
From rustic accents to modern touches, every element was carefully chosen to set the tone for what awaits inside. Whether you are stepping through this gate on a sunny afternoon or under the soft glow of twilight, I wanted it to feel calm, chic and inviting.
As you walk through our gated entry, you walk straight into our courtyard where we meet our first outdoor seating area that everyone sees right when they enter our home. While I typically lean towards high contrast, black and white spaces, I wanted this space to have a softer, calmer look but also blend with the rest of the exterior. More creams and browns with subtle black accents.
My vision for this space was to create a comfortable area that could be used during the day or nighttime. I found this Vintage Loveseat and Coffee Table that fit perfectly! These two pieces maintain the neutral aesthetic that I wanted but weren’t an exact replica or color of my other furniture. It kept the space its own while still blending into the rest of the backyard! These are in the vintage Sahara finish, which is my absolute favorite POLYWOOD color.
This outdoor space enhances to another level of beauty at night! Our family loves spending time out here when the weather isn’t too cold or too hot. S’mores nights out here are my favorite. The neutral colors make it feel so cozy and special which is the perfect environment for our family game nights!
Black and White Backyard Decor
When I dreamed up our backyard makeover, I knew I wanted a classic black and white backyard. Something that felt classic yet a little modern and something you might see in a European countryside. For our dining space refresh, I wanted something that screamed chic without trying too hard. I always want our spaces to feel polished yet comfortable.
I kept the same color tones as our fireplace seating area; creams, browns and black, but used them in different ways. Since the back side of our home is a German schmear brick, I wanted to create a neutral space but it needed to be a little more high contrast against the exterior.
This outdoor table, with its clean, simple design, became the heart of our outdoor hangout spot. We also added these comfy cushions to the seats and they also give them a more classic look. Whether I’m hosting a cozy dinner for a few close friends or throwing a full-on backyard bash, everyone always congregates around the table!
I carried the classic black and white theme throughout the rest of the backyard. I am a sucker for a timeless cabana stripe. These swivel chairs paired with the striped pillows were the perfect addition to my modern backyard! I love this space because it’s one of those conversation areas. A space where I’ll kick my feet up in the shade and chat with Brian while he grills. I’ve also caught guests taking an afternoon snooze here before. It’s one of those places where you just relax and enjoy the scenery.
Multiple seating options were a must in my backyard. I didn’t want only pool chairs to lie out because sometimes I’m not going outside to lie out in the sun, but want a comfortable seat to sit up and relax outside with a book. When we first toured this backyard, I saw the swinging bench hanging from the tree and absolutely fell in LOVE. It was this serene spot that made me visualize us living in this house. I asked the previous owner to leave it here for us. I remember waking up in this house the very first morning and sitting in this swing drinking my very first morning coffee.
It looks perfect with the rest of the backyard and the pillows add a statement piece to the simplicity of the bench. It easily has become the seat where everyone wants to sit and swing when we’re outside!
Our outdoor kitchen has become my latest pride and joy! We put so much love and time into this renovation because there is nothing better than a summer day in the sun with a night BBQ dinner to follow. It feels and smells like a day of perfection! We kept the existing stone and recently addd all new appliances. The bar height table has actually turned into one of our most used spaces. We tend to sit here more as a family than we do at the dining table! These black barstools come in both bar and counter height. They stand out in such a beautiful way but aren’t an eyesore. They match perfectly with the rest of the space and are cohesive with all the other outdoor furniture.
Neutral Balcony Decor
Before renovating our space, our upstairs balcony was a bit neglected. It wasn’t fully in our backyard because it’s upstairs, but it was still visible from the backyard area. I decided to incorporate the same aesthetic as downstairs and have both of them coordinate, but still feel like an individual space. I used this outdoor seating set that we had in our Washington home along with some other fun finds to create a very cozy and charming space. It may not be a direct piece to our backyard, but it blends in seamlessly!
Each spot in my backyard has its personality while still feeling like they belong to the same style family. It’s important to give every room it’s own special feeling and purpose for your home without overwhelming the space. If you’re thinking about giving your outdoor space a makeover, remember: embrace those neutral tones, sprinkle in a dash of your own personality, and watch as your backyard transforms into the ultimate sanctuary. Trust me, you won’t regret it!
