It only took us 7 months to get a dining room put together in our home! Ironically it’s the same amount of time it took us in our previous house. It must be a trend for us. I started dreaming of this space before we even moved into this house and it’s surreal to see it come to life. My goal was to design a space that complemented the traditional architecture of the home, while giving it a fresh modern take. Today, I want to focus on the new lighting and furniture that made this modern transitional dining room come to life.
Modern Transitional Dining Room
It’s classic, a little moody, a little modern and perfect for both every day and formal dining. I wanted a neutral space that was elegant but could also work for every day dining. A mixture of both comfortable but also elegant for when we want to have people over. I think I accomplished that!
I started the makeover by painting the walls with a lime wash paint and the ceiling SW Urbane Bronze and then had an electrician add in boxes for the two sconces on the wall. Those are the only cosmetic changes I made, the rest is all lighting and decor!
Before Dining Room
Here is the dining room before, when we moved in. Great bones, I love the beams, but it needed a little more of our style.
And this is how it looks today, from the other side! One of the reasons I wanted to keep the furniture and lighting more soft and neutral was the brick fireplace. The german schmear on the brick is gorgeous and charming and I didn’t want to compete with it. I wanted to create a space that felt cohesive and cozy.
Classic Gold Light Fixtures
Changing out the chandelier and moving it to the center of the space was priority number 1. When we moved in the chandelier was off to the side of the room, but we wanted our table in the center of the dining room which means we had to move the chandelier. I ended up installing a swag hook so I could swing the chandelier to the center. An easy fix if you don’t want to have an electrician move the box or you simply can’t.
I knew I wanted gold or brass and because I chose to go with the swag hook, I had to find a chandelier with a chain. I searched on Lamps Plus and found this gorgeous Stiffel Hartley 35″ Ring Chandelier in an Antique Gold. This chandelier is exclusive to Lamps Plus and is a really reasonable price to a chandelier of this size and style.
The Greta Brass Wall Sconce are just gorgeous and can go with many different design styles from traditional, transitional and more modern. They have clean lines and the antique gold is stunning. To me, this is the perfect shade of this finish.
Adding sconces to your space can add a sense of elegance with accent lighting but can also add a decorative element and enhance the design. In this case, the sconces added to picture vignette.
Transitional Dining Table and Chairs
All of the dining room furniture and accessories are from Lamps Plus as well. They do more than lighting! This is the Canal Dining Table and it is even more gorgeous in person. It has a leaf option, which we will keep in for this space. We wanted a large table to fit guests and fill the room and this is perfection. The finish is raw wood with natural imperfections and it’s gorgeous. But my favorite part of the table is the gold trim. It ties together all of the gold accents in the room.
For the chairs, I chose the Savannah Wood Dining Chairs. I love modern architecture of the chairs. These are what bring the clean lines and fresh look to the space. The wood legs match the table perfectly and the gold accents add to the space. They fit under the table as well which I know is very important to a lot of people!
I’ve wanted captains chairs in a dining room for as long as I can remember! I think they add such elegance and also gives you the opportunity to incorporate another design element to a space. I kept this space clean and neutral, but you could also go with a pop of pattern or a complementary color. The Warwick Fabric Captain Chairs are on rollers, have slip covers for easy cleaning and are very comfortable. I love the rollers and so do the kids :)
I could not be happier with how everything came together.
Traditional Moody Dining Room
To make the room extra cozy, I grounded the room with the Capri Textured Rug. I love the texture it brings to the space.

Do you feel the side chair sit a little low? I am in love with the look, but I am concerned with the 17.75 inch seat height.
Taryn Whiteaker says
No I don’t at all, personally. I haven’t heard anyone mention anything either.

I loved this dining room set an ordered all of it (I’m still waiting on the upholstered chairs. The leaf for the table was broken and one leg was scratched- a new table is coming in February. How is the table holding up for you? Mine has rough spots which keeps snagging clothing.
