The minute I walked through our courtyard for the first time, I knew this was OUR home. You get this magical feeling as soon as you walk in. It’s as if you just walked into the French countryside. I love every ounce of it. I’ve made several updates and changes over the past few years to make it feel a little more our style by adding more charm, coziness and greenery. It’s now finally time to add new black transitional outdoor sconces!
Black Transitional Outdoor Sconces
Black Modern Exterior Sconces
With every design decision I’ve made in this home, my goal is to maintain the unique character while also putting our own touch to it. I only want to accentuate the European characteristics. That means every design decision takes a lot of time and research as I’m always looking for the PERFECT piece to the puzzle.

I went on a hunt and found SO many great options at Lamps Plus. I did this mock up to see what each light would look like. I knew I wanted black to tie in with the wrought iron throughout the exterior. But how modern or how traditional did I want to go?
This helped me narrow down my ideas. The ultra modern, square sconces felt too modern. They felt like the expected choice or something you could find on just about any house. I wanted unique.
Hinkley Yale 25″ High Black 3-Light Outdoor Wall Light
I went with the Hinkley Yale Exterior Sconce ! I will tell you this was not my first choice initially, this was my “this is interesting, let’s save it just in case”. But when I saw it on the mock up, I knew immediately this was the one. That’s why I always stress doing a quick photoshop to see how items will look in your space!

I love how these sconces have character to them with the detailing and shape, but they aren’t overly ornate. I think black gives a slightly more modern and updated look while still keeping the character.
These exterior sconces also come in three different sizing options. I did the larger 25″ Hinkley Yale outdoor sconce with three lights for our main entrance and then did the smaller, 22″ Hinkley Yale outdoor sconce with two lights for the courtyard. If you keep scrolling, you will see the hanging Hinkley Yale that I used over our front door! I love how the line comes with several different options for different spaces, while keeping a cohesive look.
Our courtyard had both stone and exposed brick, which can be a bit tricky. The key was to find exterior sconces that went with both facades. These sconces have a slightly different look on each, but they look great on both!
When picking out any fixtures for our home, I am alway spaying attention to what is around them. One of the reasons why I went with these sconces is the slight arch on the top of the sconce. I love how the arched design accentuates the arches throughout the courtyard and our house. They work really well with the wrought iron gates and arched walk ways.
Front Door Chandelier
Our front door is tucked away in the corner. To be honest, we hardly use it. It can get extremely dark in this corner of the courtyard and the original sconces above the door was very small and the lights were always burnt out. I upgraded the fixture to the Hinkley Yale 25 3/4″ Rustic Black Outdoor Hanging Light and it completely changed the space. You can actually SEE out here and makes out front door stand out a little more.
Exterior Sconces at Night
Here is how the courtyard looks at night with the new sconces. I couldn’t be happier with how they turned out. They upgrade the exterior of our home while still keeping the character. I love how unique these scones are and I am so glad I went with the unexpected.
