I kicked off this bedroom renovation back in January with the thought that I would be done my mid-March. Boy, oh, boy! I guess good things take time and it was completely worth it on this one! I have spent the last 6 months slowly chipping away at DIY projects to turn my son’s bedroom into the ultimate Boys Sports Bedroom. Complete with a custom built-in window nook, moody industrial vibe and classic furniture that will last him for years to come.
I’m going to dive right in with a tour of the space. I’m linking all the sources along with tutorials to help you create pieces of this on your own!
Boys Sports Bedroom Reveal
This room is seriously an absolute dream. I think I might love it even more than my son. It’s the style of room I have envisioned since having boys and I still can’t get over it. Truly one of my favorite rooms I have EVER done. I am so thankful for all the amazing brand partners who helped bring this room to life, Lamps Plus, Worx Tools and Limitless Walls.
Before Bedroom
Let’s look back at how the room looked right when we moved in! It’s a great space, large room with a completely clean slate.
This side of the room had two awkward niches. There were so many things that bothered me about these. 1) the main column in the center is the vent for the chimney downstairs in our dining room. I can’t remove it, so I need to work around it. 2) I didn’t love the shape of the arches. The style of these eyebrow arches are a little dated and everything else in our home has rounded arches. They just don’t go. 3) The different size windows un each niche was hard on my OCD and need for symmetry.
Solution: create TWO separate spaces that look more intentional and are more functional.
Industrial Boys Bedroom Decor
I wanted this room to have a timeless, masculine, industrial look. Similar to an old apartment you would find in New York or Boston. That has exposed brick, timeless intricate moulding and unique features.
I started by adding DIY Picture frame moulding to the entire room and then painted the bedroom Sherwin Williams Web Gray, it is a gorgeous rich color. It is a dark gray with blue undertones. It’s the perfect color for this room. I opted for a color drenched room, meaning I painted the ENTIRE room the same color. The walls, ceiling and trim. I love this look, it makes the space feel cozy and complete with an understated elegance.
The updated furniture places a huge role in how this space transformed. I have always loved a classic Natural Linen Bed Frame with high headboard. This style bed is timeless and will suit him for years to come. I splurged on my favorite industrial night stands and then added these Tall Black Lamps.
I completed the look of the bed with these black and white striped sheets, gray linen comforter and striped quilt. For the pillows, I’ve had these square faux leather pillows for years and they are still my favorite, I added the Black Grid Pillows and a knit tassel throw.
One of my favorite tips for making a room feel complete and elevated, is to layer rugs. It adds dimension to the space and texture. I love a good chunky textured rug and paired it with this plaid washable rug.
Built-In Window Bench
This wall was a huge risk, a vision I wasn’t sure would work out, a lot of trial and error. And I could not be happier with how it turned out. I had the left eyebrow arch removed completely to focus more on the large window. I had the right arch rounded out to match the rest of the arches in our home. Then, I built a custom DIY window bench with storage. We had sconces installed to add reading lights and make it extra cozy to curl up in.
I love this little corner so much. It makes me so happy when I see my son curl up on here after school and chill. The window bench is also large enough to store all large nerf guns and big toys that don’t fit in bins.
This might just be my favorite view of the entire room. I love seeing the texture from the brick, the dark moody walls, the classic furniture and the leather accents. This view is a great example of how to mix different patterns, textures and metals and how it still look cohesive.
DIY Brick Wall
Then I used a brick tile on the chimney to make it look like an actual chimney! This helped balance out the wall, otherwise there was just a large awkward distraction there that was hard to decorate around. I took a huge risk on this project, I’ve never worked with brick before and this was a learning experience. I plan on doing a full tutorial on this and sharing what I learned. But after trial and error it turned out perfectly!
But these are thin brick tiles, they would work great on an accent wall, backsplash etc. They have rougher surface so probably wouldn’t use them on flooring.
How cute is this Baseball Chair ?!? It is one of the very first things I bought for this room because I loved it so much. My son is almost 9 and fits in it just fine! I topped it off with a cute Baseball Pillow .
Personalized Kids Gallery Wall
On the main wall when you walk into the room, I created this custom personalized gallery wall using my favorite photos of my son playing sports. I loved the black and white gallery wall from our previous home so much, that I decided to do it again on this wall! These Large Black Picture Frames are perfect! And these Gold Wireless Art Lights are my FAVORITE wireless lights I’ve used.
My son specifically asked for his own desk space in his bedroom. I went with this Black Writing Desk and Linen Leather Desk Chair . I LOVE this chair. It is gorgeous. The leather detailing on the arms is perfection.
Sports Bedroom Decor
Onto the wall I haven’t shared yet at all! After a lot of debate on how best to use this large wall ( you can see my ideas here). The game wall would have been SO FUN, but we realized he didn’t have anywhere to actually place personal items, trophies, things he wanted to display etc. So I went with this large Industrial Shelving Unit and filled it with his favorite baseball items and personal items.
Even though my son reallllly wishes I did a basketball hoop, I do love how these shelves turned out! And they are more practical. See below for more Vintage Sports Decor Finds.
To bring in even more of the sports themed, I added these ball wall mounts to display vintage sports balls. I loved these vintage footballs and liked the color of these basketballs to go with the tones of the room.
Boys Sports Bedroom Reveal
I absolutely love how this room turned out! It is everything I dreamt of and I have to pinch myself that it all came together so well.

The room looks great. My question is on the picture frame over the arch, the pvc moulding is flexible enough to bend? or did you do anything special to it? I don’t have experience with it but see it also arched.
Thanks for the tutorial and sharing your son’s room. Looks awesome!

Hi! Yes! It’s a flex trim, so it’s bendable. Here is the link: https://rivr.link/TWD-DVnf6j
