Designing kid’s rooms is one of my favorite things! I love how you can add a subtle them and get away with it and how each kid gets SO excited about every little thing in THEIR room. This is the first boys room I had ever designed. It started out as a Rustic Toddler Room then transitioned into his Rustic Modern Boys Room. I love how the room turned out and I thought I was done, but the second I hit publish on the room reveal I felt like something was missing. And apparently a lot of readers did too! I got several comments saying how the room needed a little pop of color and for once, I actually agree! I rarely use bold colors, pretty much never, but I am loving navy right now and I thought this was the perfect room to use it in. So here is round two of the reveal with his Black and Navy Boy Room!
Rustic Boy Room Tour
The funny thing is, when we moved into this home one of the things I was most excited about was finally decorating a little boys room. In our old home, my son had a gender neutral nursery and this was my chance to dive into the world of boy decor. I had always envisioned a little boys room with navy and white striped curtains, but one thing led to another and I ended up going an entirely differently direction and doing a Rustic Brown and White Boy Nursery. And here we are three years later, after many different room variation, back to the navy and white striped curtains I envisioned all along. Ha!
In addition to adding some blue, I wanted to add a little more texture and layers as well. In my last big set of updates, I installed a wall-to-wall carpet rug to give the room a whole new bold look! I love the look of layered rugs, so I added a natural jute round rug for a little more dimension and texture. It also made for the perfect place to put his adorable plush fire pit :)
I found all of these fun pillows at HomeGoods! They always have a million pillows and I typically have good luck finding them there!
I always think that changing the ceiling lights can make a huge impact in a room, I think it really brings the whole look together. This one was just $115 and completes the industrial look.
Modern Farmhouse Boy Bedding
On his bed area, I added just a hint of blue along with a red throw blanket. And those leather pillows are still my favs!
I still love this bed! I went on the hunt for a long time for a bed that I was going to love for this space and that would grow with him and I think it’s still perfect.
Rustic Boy Room Decor
You can get tutorials for several things on this side of the room, including the Distressed Dresser, Growth Chart, and Piping Shelves .
I can honestly say, this room is 100% finished and I’m so excited about it! I’m glad I took the extra step and added some blue and red to really finish off the room. What do you think?

What boy would not love that room, hey, I love it and as far as I know am not a boy. Have decorated boys rooms in my time but don’t think I had as much fun as you did. Oh the stories could tell about youngest son, nicknamed “Tasmanian devil” and he earned every bit of it. What a kid.
Taryn Whiteaker says
I have one of those too :) Thanks JaneEllen!
