It’s time for an update on the One Room Challenge! It’s week 3, I’m off to a slower start but the little changes we have made so far have already made a big impact. Let’s recap for a sec, you can read all about our Kitchen Inspiration here, and Week 2 Updates Here. So let’s take a look at the changes we made this week.
One Room Challenge Week 3
Here is how the kitchen looks today…..
And here is how it looked when we started this whole project!
So far we have switched out the light fixture, added a new rug under the dining table and now this week….. we changed out all of the cabinet pulls with something more modern. Not a huge difference, but I can sure tell in person!
New Modern Black Cabinet Pulls
Here is a loser look at the black cabinet pulls we went with! They are simple and sleek and perfect for our kitchen. Because we have so many cabinets, I was worried about picking something too heavy or over powering since there is such a contrast with the black and white. But these are subtle and look so good,
I didn’t want to drill any more holes in the cabinets so I had to find new cabinet pulls that fit the width of the previous ones. That was a little harder than I thought! I wanted something black matte and modern, and this is what we ended up with. I love how solid and heavy they are.
Black and White Kitchen Refresh
I also have plans to remove some of the cabinets and put in open shelving next week too. I think it will help give it some variety and dimension, I would also LOVE to extend the cabinets up to the top of the ceiling to really complete the look. I am crossing my fingers we can pull this off!
It is absolutely amazing to me how such small changes can make such a huge impact. I am so happy to now have something more modern in here.
Next Up: New Backsplash!
And next up! Backsplash time! Ok, so if you have been following on InstaStories you know that the backsplash discussion has been quite the thing! I originally wasn’t planning changing it out but after some thought and feedback we decided to really go for it on the kitchen refresh and replace the backsplash with something a little more modern and us.
Here are the there options that I grabbed that seem to fit what I was looking for. The large marble looking slab for a super sleek look, the large scale picket pattern and then the small scale picket pattern. We will see how it all pans out!
Next week we will start removing the mirror subway tile, crossing my fingers this goes well and doesn’t turn into a complete disaster!
All I can say is that this project went from a super easy, mainly decor refresh, to a full on kitchen makeover fixing all the things that I have wanted to change over the years! Now let’s hope I can pull this off in just 3 more weeks!
Thanks for following along, next weeks pictures might not be as pretty ha! We will be in the thick of renovation!

Hi Taryn,
I have a suggestion for you that you may or may not want to use. We did a kitchen remodel one time and loved the effect it gave us. We had stock cabinets, like yours, and I hated the dust in the overhead area. So I had them make fillers from the top of the cabinets to the ceiling and put railings with sliding doors made of golden lucite. That way, you could either put in lights up there or use it for extra storage of things very seldom used. We put lights in up there and at night it made a lovely sight to go in the kitchen and see the soft glow.
This is only a suggestion for you. You could have any color plastic put in there that you want.
Keep up the great work, Linda

Hi Linda! Yess!!! This is on our list! My ultimate goal is to have our cabinets extended to the ceiling and have those cabinets be small with glass doors and lights in them. I just don’t know if it will happen during this portion of the makeover, most likely next year some time!
