5 Steps to A Budget Friendly Room Makeover

I know I haven’t shared a lot of room reveals up to this point, but that’s probably because my whole house is constantly ‘in-progress’.  I have shared Baby E’s Nursery and our Guest Bathroom Makeover (which is now 4 years old) and hopefully there will be more soon! I feel like every room is getting a makeover right now and I just need to actually finish a space. But aren’t all of our homes constantly ‘in-progess’? Will it ever end? Probably not, and that’s the beauty of it.

As you may have noticed, I’m all about repurposing and dollar store crafts which help keep my costs down. I am a true believer that room makeovers don’t have to break the bank. They can actually be done inexpensively as long as you are willing to get your hands dirty. And when I say dirty, sometimes that only means being able to hold a can of spray paint and nail some artwork onto the wall.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when giving your room a makeover on a budget:

1) When starting your room makeover start with an inspiration piece. It can be something that is already in the room that you want to keep or it may be a piece of fabric you fell in love with. This will help shape your entire space.

2) Take an inventory of all the pieces you have in the space. Headboards, nightstands, dressers, etc. If they are still in good shape, think about what color you would like them to be for your new space. A can of spray paint can do wonders and it will only cost you $6.

2) Choose a paint color. Changing the color of  the walls can completely transform a space for just $30 (depending on the quality of paint your purchase).

3) Visit your local thrift store for additional furniture pieces, old frames, wall art and lamps. You can even purchase fabric for decorative pillows, curtains or accessories.

4) Shop the clearance sections at your favorite home decor stores. Search for items that can be recycled into something new, turn a $2 shower curtain into curtains or use a tablecloth as a rug. Think outside the box!

5) Make it your own.  While you want your space to be cohesive and have a flow to it, it doesn’t have to be matchy matchy. When upcycling old furniture and shopping at the thrift store, look for pieces that complement each other. They don’t have to be a perfect match.

Don’t think it can be done? Check out these fabulous budget bedroom makeovers.

I love these budget friendly ideas, Taryn! I have found over the years that if I keep the basics in my home a little on the neutral side, it’s so much more affordable to change things up with either things I find around my own home, thrift stores or elsewhere that can make a big difference without spending a lot. I have also taught my daughter, since she was little, to always “shop at home” and go through things that you already have before spending money on new things. Especially with her wardrobe! There always seems to be items that we have forgotten about hidden in drawers or closets that can become favorites again.

These are great examples of how much you can change a room in just a few steps! Thanks for sharing the inspiration. I have a living room screaming at me to be finished (blank wall what?) so this is good motivation.

I have found that choosing a paint color last, works for me as it is easy to match it to other things in the room etc. Great tips

Staircase reveal part one! SWIPE for the before an Staircase reveal part one! SWIPE for the before and to see all the details. This has been a major project over the course of the last 7 months, and it has been so exciting to see it all come together. My goal was to create an elegant and timeless look to our staircases, adding character with unique features of the railings, classic neutral runners with gold stair rods to complete the look and a moment for the large luxe chandelier that you can see from the courtyard. And of course a fresh look with smooth creamy walls.

But I’m not entirely done just yet! Part 2 will be coming in 2026!
