Hello, hello! I’ll save the chit chat and dive right in today. It’s been over a year since I shared my Kitchen Inspiration Post and started updating our small, builders grade kitchen. After a lot of hard work and late nights I’m so excited to finally share with all of you my 100% DIY Small Kitchen Remodel with a Modern Farmhouse Style.
Before we begin, just a few quick notes. I’m not going to narrate too much today (ok maybe just a little), instead I’ll just let you enjoy the pics. Keep scrolling for a complete shopping guide and before and after pics. I’ll also be sharing tons of tutorials in the next few weeks and I’ll include links to them below as they are posted. Ok now let’s not waste any more time…
Modern Farmhouse Small Kitchen Remodel
Small Kitchen Remodel – DIY Concrete Countertops
I absolutely love how our DIY concrete countertops turned out. They gave this kitchen the industrial chic look I wanted and they only cost me about $200 for the entire kitchen! Adding the stained wood window sill also made a huge impact for a small price.
One of my biggest debates during the remodel process was the subway tile backsplash (Imperial Bianco by The Tile Shop). I couldn’t decide if I wanted to do the entire all or just an 18″ backsplash. I went back and forth more times that I want to admit and I’m so glad I went with the entire wall. I absolutely love it and it really completed the look for the kitchen.
Small Kitchen Remodel – DIY Shelves
I loved how my DIY Bathroom Shelves turned out so I decided to do them again in the kitchen.
Small Kitchen Remodel – Faux Wood Tile
The flooring was by far the biggest transformation. Going from vinyl flooring that was starting to rip up to this gorgeous Faux Wood Tile from The Tile Shop made such a huge difference.
Small Kitchen Remodel – Maximizing Space
Remodeling this kitchen was the first priority but maximizing space was a close second. Our kitchen is really tiny and without a lot of storage so I tried to use every ounce of space including the ends of the cabinets.
Small Kitchen Remodel – Counter Depth Refrigerators
Did you know they make counter depth refrigerators? This was my first time remodeling a kitchen and learning about appliances and I was so happy to find that they make fridges that match the line of the cabinets. They are harder to find but I’m glad I was patient in my search because our new fridge gave me an extra 3″ and that is A LOT for my tiny kitchen.
Small Kitchen Remodel – Gotta Have the Chalkboard
I love having a chalkboard wall in the kitchen. Miss E loves drawing on it while I make dinner. When I came across the vintage sign in the Silhouette Store I thought it was perfect for this space. It’s a good reminder for me to document all those little drawings and special moments with my kids and remember this crazy time in life.

Girl!!! I LOVE it ALL! Great job! Seriously I’m feeling inspired. I need to do those countertops, did you paint your walls light gray? I’m worried about doing the natural concrete color with the gray walls, but if you have gray walls it’s totally working and giving me hope!
Taryn says
THANK YOU!!!! Yes, the walls are gray. It’s a super light gray color. I ALMOST painted them white but I’m glad I didn’t because I actually really love everything together.

Love your kitchen! The white is so much better than the pickled cabinets. It just goes to show you, a kitchen doesn’t have to be massive to have a ton of character and charm. Nicely done!

It looks truly amazing! Such a fabulous transformation! So now for the fridge question — I, too, am in the market for a side-by-side counter depth fridge. And my head has been spinning a bit in my search. Seems like every fridge has completely different dimensions! Crazy! Can I ask what brand & style the one you chose is? And perhaps a link? I really like how it looks.
Thanks for your help!
:) Linda

Where did you get the number plates? Or did you do those yourself?
Taryn says
Hi! Yes, I did them myself. I bought the plates at the Dollar Tree and then added vinyl numbers to them! Super simple :)
kimi says
Hello there!! New follower! Love everything was just wonder how you hung the plates!?;) thank you!!!
Taryn says
Hi Kimi! I used a little trick I saw from another blogger (but I can’t remember who at the moment), I hot glued a paper clip to the back to create a hook and then hung them on a nail :)
Jenna Sue says
Perfection! I feel like I would have made some of the exact same choices if it were my kitchen. Our styles are very similar :)

This remodel turned out great! What a difference color and organization makes to a small kitchen. It made it look so much larger. Thanks so much for the great ideas.
Lorene says
Lovely space! Do you have any more info about the wood window sill? And can you tell me how it’s holding up? I have been wanting a wood windowsill by my kitchen sink but I’ve been afraid of how it would stand up to the potential moisture, heat, etc. Any info or tips you have would help set my mind at ease :)
Thanks again! Pinning for when I finally get to redo my kitchen!
Taryn says
Hi Lorene! I actually don’t have the tutorial up yet, but I could definitely do one soon! We only lived in that house for a few months after we redid the kitchen but it seemed to hold up just find. I put several coats of sealer on it and caulked around the edges to prevent moisture from getting in.
Mindi says
Your kitchen is so beautiful! I love it all!!
Zolynne says
Hi,
Just saw the post re: the concrete countertops, and followed to this post to find out about the cabinet doors. I can’t seem to find whether you replaced them, or if you painted the originals white. If painted, could you please tell me what kind of paint you used to have them look so professional? Thank you so much! Your kitchen is beautiful!
Katherine says
Hello! I have “Dove White” sitting in my living room ready to paint my cabinets in my own small kitchen! Did you use a: sand, oil primer, enamel paint regime on them? Trying to make sure I get it right! Any tips? Thanks so much and bravo!
Elizabeth says
Did you paint the counter tops too?? If so, what color and brand. Thanks
Taryn says
Hi! I did a concrete overlay on them. You can find all the details here: http://designdininganddiapers.com/2014/06/installing-faux-concrete-countertops/

LOVE your blog! I just found it today. We are about to move and this is a true inspiration. I love getting pictures from the graphics fairy! What a great Idea to frame them.
Tara says
Your kitchen looks great!! I see tt! I see this post was published in 2014. How are the concrete countertops holding up? I am in the process of upgrading my builders grade kitchen now and I am leaning strongly on installing concrete countertops.
Taryn says
Hi! We actually don’t live in that house anymore. I had the countertops for about 6 months before we moved (in the kitchen) and we used the bathroom ones for about a year. I thought they both held up great. You just have to be cautious of oil spills as they will stain.
Herry Hermawan says
Beautiful kitchen, with white and gray, make the kitchen became more bright and clean.
Modern Kitchen says

Hi! I absolutely love your renovation! I wanted to ask — did you use one of the stainless steel paint kits on your stove? Or, did you buy a new stove?
Thank you!
