Kicking off a brand new space with you today! I’m currently working on our entry hallway refresh and hope to have that done here shortly to share with you. However, the planning and dreaming never stops! We have this covered outdoor patio off the courtyard with a cozy fireplace, just waiting to be used this winter. Our temps here are getting cooler and it’s the perfect time to try out the fireplace. But first, it’s time for a few updates and to furnish it.
Current Outdoor Fire Place Room
Here is what the space looks like now! You can see our new home tour to get a better idea of where this is at in our home. But to the left is the casita, the new home office we just renovated and to the right are the doors to our kitchen. So this space connects the two living areas.
My goal is to create a space where guests can drink their morning coffee outside their room and where we can gather in the winter months and sit by the fire.
Covered Outdoor Porch Design Board
I put together two design boards with slightly different looks. I bought everything to put both together, I may need to see it in person first. But the furniture and lighting won’t change! Those are set in stone. I want to embrace the character of the home while also giving it a fresh look.
Let me know which one is your favorite in the comments!
- POLYWOOD Braxton Loveseat in Vintage Sahara Finish
- POLYWOOD 36″ Square Coffee Table
- Modern Framed Canvas Artwork
- Large Outdoor Artisan Bowl
- Faux Moss For Bowl
- Faux Cedar Trees
- Concrete Planter
- Concrete Wood Stools/End Tables
- Ceramic Fire Balls
- 4 ft Forged Black Chandelier
- Black and White Outdoor Rug
I feel like this look is slightly more modern and current with the black and white rug. It would pull in nicely with the freshly painted ceiling and black chandelier while also remaining more traditional with the faux cedar plants and style of the furniture.
The second option is more neutral, softer tones and gives off a little bit more modern French country look. These taupe and cream striped ottomans were such a find (reasonable too) and would give a nice pop of pattern.

I would love to have an outdoor space like this!! I love both options! Can’t wait to see what you do. If had to pick I think maybe the first one with the black and white rug.
Kelli says
I think you need bigger more solid looking furniture for that space.
Taryn Whiteaker says
I think it’s the angle of the picture, it’s not as deep as it seems from the picture.

Love the stripes and the wood look end table (I actually have one). Furniture seems a bit small for what seems like a pretty large space.
Taryn Whiteaker says
Thank you! I think the angle I took the photo is making the space feel larger than it is! There is really only room for those two love seats so we can still walk between the casita and the main house.
Tanya says
I love your designs but think number two is more in line with your house vibe! I love it! Keep up the great work. You are an inspiration to all who follow you Taryn!

Thank you for such a sweet message! I love your input!

I love them both but the second one with the stripes is more eye catching and the green ties in with the plant.

Oh my goodness, I ?? Both. We are just now building a iron modern pergola with black iron couches with white cushions. I’ve been having anxiety over the outdoor rug. Any suggestions you have are greatly appreciated so I can get unfrozen over decision!!!
Tonya says
“Love” not ??, LOL. I love your choices for both.
Carol H. says
What I’ve found to be hard about decorating is that there isn’t always a right answer. Many times there are options that are all equally nice, just different. And that’s what we have here, two beautiful choices. For me, I like the way the striped rug reflects the rails on the gate and the metal of the chandelier. I’m sure you’ll be adding more pattern and texture with throw pillows too.

Second one!
Diane M says
I like the first one better because of the rug & the symmetry of the two end tables. It’s simpler, more relaxed.
Tonya says
Love them both! I think I’d go with the second rug, more cozy and inviting especially for those early mornings with a bit of a chill. Let us know what you pick.
