I have wanted to make updates to our kitchen for some time now and it’s crazy to see how quickly things evolved over the last few months! Back in September I decided it was time to update our kitchen with more modern kitchen furniture and decor. It was time to make this space more my style and feel more like home. Who knew just updating our furniture would lead to a whole kitchen makeover!
I wanted to take the time to talk about all the furniture choices we made during the kitchen renovation and how they inspired the rest of the kitchen design process.
Modern Kitchen Furniture and Decor
My ultimate goal for the kitchen was to update it with a more mid-century modern, Scandinavian feel. My personal style is black and white with wood accents and that is what I had planned for this space. I started with picking out modern, yet kid-friendly dining chairs and bar stools and used the lines of those pieces to help shape the rest of the design elements.
Modern Sideboard Display
Recognize this space? This is where I used to have my shiplap display wall and industrial metal farmhouse cabinet. I wanted something more mid-century modern and minimalistic than what was there before. I picked out this Gray Distressed Sideboard Table and new artwork. And I love that it holds all my pretty white serving pieces in there! Since we took down two cabinets, it was nice to have some extra space to hold additional dishes.
I really love the sleek modern lines of this sideboard. It is a longer than what we had before, so it takes up more of the wall space and fits more proportionately then what was there before. I added these reasonably priced Black and White Canvas Prints above for something different.
I have been loving all the pampas grasses being used in decor! You seriously would not believe what it took for me to get these for this space, but it was worth it! They are so full of texture and modern elements and I love that you can just find them in nature.
Scandinavian Inspired Dining Chairs
Changing up the dining chairs were on my top priority! Our previous ones were great, but I really wanted to shift the style to more mid-century modern/Scandinavian and these Black Spindle Dining Chairs were the perfect change. They are wooden chairs and are extremely comfortable. My daughter says they are WAY better then the precious metal ones that were often freezing to sit on, so I’ll take that as a positive!
Under the dining table I added a Black and White Rug. It’s tricky to find a kid-friendly dining room rug, but I have to say I think we nailed it on this one! It is technically an indoor-outdoor rug but its still soft to walk on. But it has proven to be incredibly durable! With three younger kids and a dog, we haven’t had a single issue with it and we’ve had it for a few months now. Not to mention, I love how it brings the whole space together!
Kid-Friendly Modern Bar Stools
Would you believe that our previous bar stools were from our old house over FIVE YEARS ago? When we moved in they somewhat went with our decor and were durable and kid-friendly so I didn’t bother changing them. I always wanted big high back upholstered bar stools but that will never happen with kids living here!
I knew I wanted Black Modern Bar Stools that were kid-friendly, aka you can wipe down after every meal. You guys, I LOVE these. Not only are they easy to clean, they are actually really comfortable. They have a wide, scoop seat and the kids love them. I give them five stars for being chic and modern and kid-friendly.
Kitchen Chandelier
I already shared a bit about this Modern Chandelier during the renovation process. It’s crazy to think how much the kitchen has changed even since we installed it a month ago! It was the first big change we made in the kitchen and that alone made a huge difference.
Lighting is so important in the home, it can really change the entire look and feel of a space. I’m going to be doing a whole post on kitchen lighting soon, so be on the look out for that!
Black Cabinet Pulls
Updating all of the cabinet pulls was a must! We previously had rhinestone cabinet pulls that came with the house and they just weren’t our style at all. It was fun to feel fancy, but you also want a space to feel like you and we aren’t always that fancy ;). These sleek Black Cabinet Pulls are simple,
We are so thrilled with all the changes we made and all of these amazing pieces we found at Overstock to help give our kitchen the facelift we needed.
