Every year I have these great big plans to decorate excessively for fall and the winter months. And every September life happens, school starts, sports start, other big design projects happen and well, the seasonal decor becomes a little more minimal than expected. But over the years I have learned that that’s OK. Your home doesn’t need these great big seasonal vignettes to transition into different seasons. Sometimes it can be as simple as changing a few throw pillows, placing a few pumpkins out, adding some texture and cozy elements to your mantel. I find myself craving more minimalists decor in general these days, so this year decorating for fall turned out to be more about changing out a few decor items versus tons of ‘stuff’.
Decorating For Fall
Today, I’m sharing our family room all decorated for fall! The last time I shared this space in our home was when I revealed our new paint refresh back in February. Part of me is feeling the need/want to make some bigger changes in here and make it even more minimalists and modern, but those will have to wait.
For now, I did make some small changes for fall. I removed a few of the prints on the vignette, added a few vases and branches and switched out some other small details. But what is funny, is how much this corner changed by simply changing the blankets hanging on the blanket ladder! Removing the real creamy ones and replacing them with this plaid wood blanket oddly made a huge difference!
Subtle Fall Decor
When it comes to adding fall to this space, I brought back out my DIY Pumpkin Art that I made using a vintage door and simply added a few pumpkins and branches.
Adding Blankets and Texture
To me, fall is all about texture. It is that amazing time of year when you can bring out all the natural textures into your home and it will instantly feel cozier and ready for the cooler months. Over here I added a few wool blankets, a faux fur blankets on the white couch and a few vases with beautiful detail.

Hi Taryn,
I just love your work. Your style couldn’t have been described any better. I love your creative style mixing modern, industrial and rustic. I may be moving soon from California to Nevada. Your work will be a huge inspiration for me since the design in Las Vegas is just a bit loud for my taste.
All the tips you can provide will be so helpful to transition the home to feel cozy and welcoming.
I have lived in California my entire life and my home has been my place of serenity. This project will be a huge undertaking. Wish me luck.
