Soooo, I never thought I’d say this, but I’m actually getting pretty close to ‘finishing’ decorating our house! What?! I mean, I’m sure I will always find things to change and update, but when it comes to big room reveals we are almost done. Which seems so crazy to say. You all know I’m in the middle of our big master bedroom reno right now (which still has a wayyyyys to go) but there is one more room in the house that is in need of a major overhaul. The playroom. Oh the playroom.
You see, our playroom is exactly what you would expect it to be. It’s the one room of the house where all of the toys get dumped. It’s my laundry folding room. It’s our movie room. It’s our fort building room. It’s also a place that has so much potential. And I’m ready to go BIG!
Here is the current state of the room. This is the one side of the room that I have semi-decorated. I still like the overall look I have going on and the couch will for sure be staying. I just want to build off of this look and finish the rest of the room!
Prepare to cringe. And here is the opposite side of the room.
This room has been the lowest priority on my list, but it’s time to turn it into a great space that we will continue to use for years to come and a place that the kids can grow with. I envision it to be a space that is great for toys and playing, but also for hanging out with friends and enjoying movie nights. And of course a design that fits my design style.
I have been really eyeing bold wall colors lately. I keep seeing dark charcoal and even black walls popping up and it’s definitely intriguing me! I’ve seen them paired with shiplap and other wood accents that give them a little texture and I’m starting to think this is the direction I want to in the playroom. Since it’s essentially a ‘media room’ I am thinking this would be the place to experiment with dark walls. And then add some pops of bright colors (maybe) since it is the kid’s room.
I turned to KILZ® COMPLETE COAT™ Paint for this project, it’s a paint and primer in one and is 100% acrylic paint and also works for both interior AND exterior. They make this beautiful dark gray color called Rebel, isn’t it such a gorgeous rich gray color? You can get it at Walmart for just $20 a gallon! I will just caution that not every store carries all of the paint colors, mine only had a few available in-store so I had to go online to find a full list of the KILZ COMPLETE COAT Paint Colors.
The second I saw this color, I knew it was the one! And the sample photos that went along with it just completed my vision for this space even more! I love the dark shiplap in this photo. I like how it adds dimension to the dark color and also gives it texture.
And then I kept flipping through the other sample photos and saw this one and it just confirmed my decision even more. I have been crushing on natural wood lately and I love the contrast between the dark gray and the wood. Plus those pops of mustard yellow and Burgundy are beautiful. I might be able to get behind those colors.
The mixture of both modern lines and rustic touches in both of these photos is exactly what I’m going for! I’m so excited to get painting in here and add some natural wood elements to along with! I’ll also be adding a storage component too. Because you can never have enough storage in a playroom right?
I’m so excited to be kicking off this project with the KILZ Brand and get the project done right. I’m sure I’ll be posting sneak peeks on InstaStories, so make sure you are following along on my Instagram.

I have been eyeing a color like this for my fireplace. Its currently a terrible shade of brick red, and I was thinking I nice color pop would be great for our family room. Good choice!
