Felt Fall Leaves Pillow with May Richer Fuller Be

Hey y’all! I’m Chaney from May Richer Fuller Be and I’m pumped to be over here today while Taryn takes some time to snuggle her new little one. I’ve got a fun and easy fall project for you. I hope it’s one that you can take and put your own spin on and make beautiful and unique! As you can see from the title, I’m showing you how to make an appliqued felt fall leaves pillow (whew, that’s a mouthful!).
Supplies needed:
  • Pillow cover
  • Felt
  • Embroidery thread
  • Embroidery needle or regular sewing needle with a large eye
  • Scissors

I had a couple of old blue ticking stripe pillow covers that needed a little oomph if you know what I mean, so I used one of those for this project.

Felt is a great medium to use for this kind of applique because the edges won’t fray and it comes in all sorts of colors. I chose white and added color with some red embroidery thread.
First, I cut a whole bunch of leaf-shaped pieces of felt. I used the “fold in half and cut” method to make them symmetrical. (It’s the same method you’d use to cut out things like paper hearts.) Then I laid them out on the pillow cover as if they were leaves on a branch to get a preview of how they’d look.

Once I was happy with the positioning, I stitched the leaves to the pillow cover one at a time using a simple running stitch. I mimicked the central vein of a leaf by stitching right down the middle with the red thread. I doubled the thread to make sure you could see the stitching really well. Once I finished stitching a leaf, I tied off the embroidery thread on the back and moved on to the next one. This sewing really is as simple as it looks in the photo – just make sure you begin on the underside of the pillow cover with the first stitch to hide the knot!

Once all the leaves were attached, I started another running stitch to make a branch to connect them. This can be super free-form – no need for perfection with it.

That’s it! Using felt and embroidery thread is a simple method to get a custom appliqued look on a pillow with whatever design you can dream up! These fall leaves can definitely transition into the winter months too. They’d compliment Christmas decor well – don’t you think?

I loved this idea so much, I ended up making another with the silhouette of a bird on it. If you want more details on that one, you can head over to my blog.

Hope y’all enjoyed reading about this little project. If you have any questions, feel free to let me know in the comments and I’ll pop in and respond!

Went over to see both pillows which I really love and pinned both. Love the texture of the ticking fabric, different than I’ve seen. Was looking for ticking couple weeks ago at Hobby Lobby in Grand Junction, the regular clerk there said they don’t carry it. Only other place I’ve seen any is JoAnn’s. At least some store has some. I love to use ticking fabric, just a certain texture and look to it. I’ll have to stock up on some so I have it for the season of sewing I’m likely to do. Happy days

#ad We’ve been working on a few refreshes in our backyard this year! The sun has worn down a lot of our furniture out here so we are swapping out our weathered umbrella tables with these gorgeous black fluted tables from @veradek . I already had the matching planters out here (and love them BTW), and decided to add one more in the SandStone color for a bit of contrast. #myveradek #reimagineoutdoors #meetyououtside

Almost everything in here was either brought from our Washington home 3 years ago or bought second hand! Piece by piece this room has become a cozy space for our family over the last 3 years. The new stairs are staying and will work into the new design, I love them so much.
