Sleep. I wish I knew what that really meant. But I think every mom feels that way at some point. Can anyone relate? Thankfully, I am the type of person that doesn’t need a lot of sleep but when I do get a chance to lay my head down to rest, there is nothing better than crawling into a cool (or warm) cozy bed and drifting off (for maybe 5 minutes until you hear the baby start crying).
The only problem is, during the winter I want a warm bed, during the summer I want a cool bed and my husband just wants to sleep in an ice box all year round. So in other words, I’m not sure if our bed is ever JUST the right temperature. Until now.
My friends at Sleep Number asked if my hubby and I wanted to try out their new Dual Temp layer. It’s a padded layer that fits directly on top of our current mattress and allows us to customize the temperature of each side of the bed using active air technology. Amazing.
SO here is how it works.
You can purchase the Dual Temp directly rom Sleep Number. We had ours delivered to our home and a team from Sleep Number came and set it up for us. The installation was extremely simple and only took about 15 minutes and in my opinion you could easily do it yourself and save some money.
The Dual Temp sits directly on top of your current mattress and it comes in a twin, queen or a king. We don’t have a Sleep Number mattress and that didn’t matter, it still fits great.
The layer adds another couple of inches of cushion to the bed. It is soft, flexible and in my opinion makes our bed more comfortable.
The DualAir technology is circulated through the bed using hoses that connect from the Dual Temp layer to a machine that sits under our nightstands. If you already have nightstands in your room, you will hardly notice the extra hardware since it fits perfectly underneath. They will also fit under the bed as well. Coming from someone who always has design in mind, I thought they hoses were going to bother me, but they are actually pretty hidden.
Despite the extra height from the Dual Temp and the hoses, our fitted sheet still fit perfectly on top of the layer and helps hold it in place. The hoses just peek out from underneath. It’s not a problem at all.
When the Dual Temp is turned on, you can hear the fans in the machines working. If you are sensitive to sound this may bother you. At first I really noticed it, but after a few nights it just became white noise.
Now onto my favorite part! The layer comes with two remotes, one for each side of the bed. My hubby and I now have our own remotes that allow us to control the temperature on our own side of the bed. We even get to personalize them with our names, pretty fancy huh?!
After trying out the Dual Temp for a few weeks my husband and I quickly learned which temperatures we both preferred. It’s no surprise that his remote to set to the coldest temperature possible all night, while mine has varied over the past few weeks. I really enjoyed getting into a crisp cool bed in the beginning but once our outside temps dropped into the 30’s I have now been enjoying the warmer temperatures.
What I found is that if you want a cool bed, you need to have it on the highest ‘cool’ setting. I didn’t feel a huge difference when it was set to 1 or 2 cool bars.
But on the flip side, the warmer setting gets hot quick! At the highest setting I woke up dying of the heat, but it seemed to be just perfect with 1 or 2 bars.
My only complaint is that on the Dual Temp website and on the commercials, they give you the impression that you can actually set an exact temperature but that is not the case. You only have three settings for warm and three settings for cool. You don’t actually know what temperature your bed is set to. I think that is a little misleading.
The remote also allows you to set a timer for how long you want the Dual Temp on for. You can set it for up to 9 hours but I generally just left mine on all night and let’s face it there is no way I’m getting 9 hours of sleep these days.
I found that the Dual Temp worked best when turned on 30-60 minutes before bedtime. Any less than that and I couldn’t really feel the difference when climbing into bed. It’s definitely worth it to turn it on early! Trust me.
And once you make up your bed, you won’t even notice it on there!

Here are some of my concluding thoughts.
Like any piece of new technology, I am always skeptical of how well it will actually work. The DualTemp surpassed any expectations I had for it and I can’t imagine sleeping without it now. My husband and I both agree that we get a better night’s sleep when using the DualTemp. I think it’s a combination of the softness of the mattress, the white noise of the fans and the fact that we are both at a comfortable temperature all night. I would highly recommend the DualTemp to anyone that struggles with staying warm or cool at night. It’s worth the money!

Boy that sure sounds like something I’d like. In the winter I’m freezing at night. Not much heat goes into our end of the mfg. home, none in our bathroom. I had 4 quilts on bed, wore flannel jammers, long sleeved tv shirt under top and at least 2 or3 pairs of heavy socks with bottom of jammies pants tucked in so they wouldn’t creep up during the night. I end up scooting way down so my head is almost covered. Old age maybe?
In summer I’m ok as it cools off here at night and we have the ceiling fan going at least on low. I have to have at least a sheet on me and later on a light blanket/quilt.
What a neat thing to get to try out, lucky you. Hope it’s helped now that you have to get up at night with baby. Hope he’ll sleep more soon.
I was very lucky with 4th. one, She’d wake up for her bottle then so right back to sleep. Thank heavens as I need a lot of sleep and don’t do well when I don’t get it. My youngest son was really bad about sleeping at night, he’d have me up continuously for a couple days. I was a bit apprehensive when I was pregnant for 4th .It was like she knew she’d better sleep right away, she was much easier baby than 3rd.
It’s gotten quite cool here, The wind was awful today and the temp has dropped, burrrr. Thank heavens I had a long sleeved tshirt and sweat shirt available plus a pair of faux fuzzy ugh boots, boy did my tootsies say thank you. Happy weekend Mama
Oh my- I am so wanting one of these. My hubs is 6’6″ & 300 lbs & I’m 5’4″ & less than half is weight. SO the idea of having a sleep number where we can both get the support we need is so appealing. He obviously needs something more firm & that would be too hard for me at my weight. Then the perk of the temp control would be fabulous- we can never get it right. I would love to have one of these as our next bed. Very cool.
