These summer nights are fleeting and I am holding onto every evening we get to spend at the river. While I love the nights with the kids, watching them fly off the rope swing and taking family floats down the river, there is nothing like spending quality time with this guy. The quiet moments with just the two of us are out numbered which makes these moments even more special.
Make Date Night Simple
This month we celebrated 11 years of marriage and 13 years of being together. With three kids, crazy work schedules and kids activities, it’s not always the easiest to sneak away on a full date night. One of the things I’ve learned over the years is that date nights can be simple and just as much fun as those elaborate fancy night outs. You just need three things 1) each other 2) peaceful environment and 3) a great bottle of wine.
Two things that we love to do together are have a datenight-in on our back yard and crack open a bottle. Simply listening to the quiet sounds of nature, sipping on some Decoy wine and a great conversation is all we really need.
One thing we started doing a few years ago was set “date night ins” where we carve out time after the kids go to bed to just be together. No distractions, just us and a glass of wine. Sometimes we turn on the fire on the back patio and sit outside, no phones or computers. Just us. Other times we can have a neighbor sitter come hang out at the house after the kids go to bed and we can take a walk down to the river for an hour. I’m so thankful for where we live.
Time For Rose´
I first fell in love with Decoy wines last fall and used them in my Thanksgiving tablescape. Their Red Wine is one of my very favorites and this selection of summer wines didn’t disappoint. The rose´is sweet and smooth but also crisp and refreshing. Easily one of the best I’ve had.
Get Outside Together
May be it’s growing up in the Pacific Northwest, or maybe it’s just how God made me. But being outside and truly enjoying nature is one of my love languages. Being in environments like this always allow me to unplug and enjoy the company around me. And one of the few places that let me clear my mind. Being here together is so refreshing.
So if you are reading this and are a young couple with little babies and wonder how you will ever go on a date night together again, or maybe you have older kids and schedules are crazy like ours. I encourage you to take a second and carve out 30-60 minutes in your night, even if it’s in your own back yard. Create your own date night. Create your own special moments and savor every conversation you get together.
I truly savor every moment we get together. Whether it’s watching the kids play sports and we actually get to be at the same game, or going out on big weekend adventures, but these quiet moments in our own home or backyard are truly some of the best. There is a reason why we chose to live out in the country and this is one of them.
