Rice Krispie Treat Bouquet

A few weeks ago I had the fun opportunity to take part in Design Dazzle’s Summer Camp Series, where a group of bloggers shared all things related to kids and summer. Today, I’m sharing with you the edible craft I did for the series.

I don’t know about you, but one of my (and my daughter’s) favorite goodies are Rice Krispie Treats. I mean, how can you go wrong, right? But since it’s summer time and everything tastes better when it looks pretty (or am I the only one who thinks that?!), I decided to give this traditional treat a little summer twist. Here is my Rice Krispie Treat Bouquet, something you can bring to a BBQ, use as a party centerpiece or give as a thank you or congratulations gift.

Rice Krispie Treat Bouquet

It was actually pretty easy to make and guess what, most of my supplies came from the Dollar Tree! However, while it was easy to make, I did have a major fail at the end of it so you’ll have to keep reading to learn from my mistakes :)

Supplies Needed:

– Rice Krispies

– Marshmallows

– Butter

– Powdered Sugar

– Milk

– Food Coloring

– Candy Dots

– 9X13 Baking Pan

– Wax Paper

– Small Pot

– Sand (or something heavy to weight the pot)

– Gray Moss

– Wooden Kitchen Skewers

– Raffia (or ribbon of your choice)

Rice Krispies Bouquet Collage 1Start by making a basic batch of Rice Krispies using the cereal, marshmallows and butter and following the directions on the back of the box.  The only difference is that you will want to put wax paper into the pan before packing in the treats. Pat in the treats until they are about 1″ thick. Let them cool for about an hour and then pull out the wax paper along with the treats and you now have a nice cutting surface that the treats will slip off of.

I used a metal flower cookie cutter and pressed very firmly down to make sure it cut all the way through the treats. Then trim away the edges. Since Rice Krispie Treats are forgiving you can always mold some of the areas.

I made a simple batch of frosting for the center of the flowers, recipes as follows: 1/2 butter, 2 cups of powdered sugar and 2 Tbsp. of milk and cream together. Then separate the frosting into small bowls and add two drops of your desired food coloring into each bowl. Mix. This will make WAY more frosting then you need for three flowers, but will work great if you are making more, or just like to eat extra frosting :)

I don’t have a fancy piping bag so I used a plastic bag and cut the tip off, then made a small circle. And look how perfect those candy dots are!Rice Krispies Bouquet Collage 4

Fill your pot with sand (or another weighted material). Using wooden kitchen skewers, thread each flower onto a stick and place them into the sand.

I finished off my pot with some gray moss and little raffia bows!

And after you admire it for a little while, it’s time to dive in!

Now…. here is my MAJOR FAIL moment. About an hour after I finished my bouquet I noticed that my flowers had slipped off the skewers. SO here is my best advice, I often add extra butter to my Rice Krispies Treats to make them extra gooey, so I might cut back on the butter portion or make them a little stiffer by adding more cereal. You could also put frosting on the skewer before threading the treat and then let it dry laying down for a bit before placing it into the pot.

Hope you are all having a great week!
