Tis the season for DIY Holiday Decor and Handmade Gifts! Every year I sit down and make a long list of new decor I want to make for the holidays and gifts I want to make for friends and family. I generally get through about half of it, but it’s always good to get ideas down on paper. (:
One of the things on my to-do list this year is this DIY Rope Basket. I LOVE baskets, I have them all over our home, some have more practical uses and others are for pure decoration but either way they make great fillers! We use them to hide toys, store blankets or even just stand alone.
If you haven’t had a chance to check out CreativeBug yet you definitely need to, especially if you love learning new crafting and DIY techniques. The site has over 500 instructional videos on various crafts including home decor, knitting, sewing, jewelry, food and kid’s crafts. There is something for everyone.
Sometimes I get stuck in a rut and only use mediums I feel comfortable with, and CreativeBug has helped me venture out and try new things.
It’s no secret that I have a love for neutral decor, to help give my rooms dimension I like to use a lot of texture, especially organic and natural ones. I was instantly drawn to the class on this DIY Stitched Rope Basket . The sample basket is beautiful and would work great in any home.
I took the class and loved it. The instructor is awesome and she walks you through the process perfectly. She makes it seem so easy (and it really is). I’ve sewn my whole life but never made anything like this before and I had so much fun. It was a learning experience though, my basket isn’t perfect but this type of basket is very forgiving.
I choose a combination of black rope and cream rope with red accent stitching. The great thing is, you can choose any colors you want to make your basket. You can make it in holiday colors to match your decor or make it as a gift.
My basket pairs great with my every day decor…
Or I can add some pinecones to dress it up for winter.
You can find a full list of supplies needed for this project on the DIY Stitched Rope Class page, but here is exactly what I used for mine:
- 50 ft. Black Braided Rope 1/4″ *
- 50 ft. Cream Braided Rope 1/4″
- Burgundy thread
- Cream thread
- Scissors
* Amazon has tons of different rope colors to choose from!
It’s amazing how those few things can turn into this! It took me about 2 hours to complete, I think it could have taken less time but I did have to go back and restitch a few places.
