DIY Honeycomb Side Table Using ScotchBlue Painters Tape

Thanks For Sharing!

Believe it or not, I’m making a lot of progress in my daughter’s room. She is actually going to be moving in this week which means you should be seeing a reveal in weeks to come (pending baby’s arrival). The look for the room has definitely evolved since my original design, but I’m loving how bold, modern, vintage and girly it is turning out to be! Is it possible to have all of that included in one description?

I’m using a lot of black and white bold patterns in the room and this dresser also fell victim to my obsession. Since I’ve been working on this room I’ve been looking for a side table/dresser with really clean lines that also has some character. I stumbled upon this table at the Goodwill for $8 (umm, amazing deal) and knew it was coming home with me. What a steal. But like most things that come home with me from a thrift store, it is in need of a good makeover. So today, I’m showing you how I transformed this table using a DIY Honeycomb pattern using some ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape and paint!

Want to know what this $8 table looked like before?

Honeycomb Side Table Makeover Before and After

See what a little paint and tape can do? Total transformation.

Are you loving the honeycomb pattern as much as me? This may be a bold statement but I think honeycomb and houndstooth might be taking over chevron. Maybe.

So let’s dive into how this transformation happened.

Supplies:

– White Paint ( I used Annie Sloan Pure White Chalk Paint but you could use other paint types as well)

– Black Chalkboard Paint (Again, you don’t have to use chalkboard paint you could easily use a black high gloss paint for this, just depends on the look you want)

– ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape

– Honeycomb Stencil

– Paintbrush (one large and one fine tip)

– Furniture Wax (if using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint)

I started by cleaning the table using generic cleaning wipes and then washing it with a wet cloth. Because I was using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint I didn’t have to sand or prime the surface, but if you were using any other type of paint I would recommend doing this.

Since I wasn’t planning on painting the interior, I taped around the edges of the dresser to prevent paint from getting on the drawers.

Even though I was planning on painting some of the detail work an additional color, I still painted the entire piece in two coats of white paint to give it a good base.

Once it was dry, it was time to put the tape to work and plan out the detailing.

Using the ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape I taped off the trim work on the drawers. I really wanted to accent the beautiful detailing of the piece.

TIP: To get really clean edges when using ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape, try using an X-axto knife to cut the tape with a perfectly straight edge.

Next, it’s time to start taping off the pattern for the top of the table. I have been loving the honeycomb pattern lately and I decided to take a bold approach and use it on this piece.

I used my Silhouette to cut out a stencil for the pattern. I tried to keep the width of the pattern close to the width of the tape so it would be easy to tape off.

I first used a pencil to outline the pattern and then carefully put the pieces of ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape in place.

I carefully applied two coats of black chalkboard paint over the tape. Be careful not to apply too much at once to prevent any bleeding.

I let it dry overnight and then carefully pull the tape off. Look crisp clean lines! I had to use a fine tip paint brush to make a few small touch ups, along with erase any pencil marks but nothing major. Love this honeycomb pattern!

I chose to keep the original hardware because I really like the natural rubbed metal look and I’m all for mixing the old with the new!

I thought you meant you were going to use a commercial stencil. You did such a great job taping that out. Don’t know if I could be that patient to apply the tape let alone get it so perfectly straight as you did. Why am I surprised? You’re good girl.
Wow, what a cute baby bump. I’m sure getting impatient to see your new baby. Did I tell you I love babies?
Your table turned out great, how does Miss E like it? How does she feel about not being the baby anymore? Hope that transition will go smoothly. Once they see baby with Mom/Dad sometimes it’s hard for them. I’m thinking you’ve been preparing her for this and redoing her room might help.
Are you supposed to be breathing paint fumes? Sorry it’s hard not to worry.

I LOVE Honeycomb/Hexagon! I did an entire wall of it in my living room :)

I have to try out that painter’s tape. I’ve tried store brands and FrogTape and have been absolutely mortified at all the bleeding.

Caught this project on an old link party post from The Shabby Nest. I’m a big fan of black and white, and the addition of the honeycomb pattern is cute too. Great staging with the brass lamp and the black wall, too! Nicely done!
