1st Birthday Onsie and Tip for Making Pretty Ribbon Flowers

Hi Friends! Before I dive into today’s post I want to let you know that I’m guest posting over at My Champagne Taste today! Come on over and say hi :)

Yesterday I revealed my daughter’s Shabby Chic 1st Birthday Party and while it was FULL of details, I’m sharing a few more with you. Hope you don’t mind. Today, I’m giving you a quick tutorial on how to make a personalized onsie AND sharing a little secret of mine for how to make easy ribbon/fabric flowers. You won’t want to miss it.

I made this little onsie for Baby E to wear for her very first birthday party. I took a regular white onsie, tea-stained it and then added a few embellishments. I chose a floral print for the ‘1’ to match her party theme and the flowers were made using the super simple technique below (keep scrolling). You really don’t want to miss out on this huge secret.

Tutorial

I started with a basic white onsie. Nothing special. Pretty much what Baby E wears as an undershirt every day.

I used the same stained technique on the onsie that I used with the Tea-Stained Coffee Filter Wreath. I filled a big pot halfway full with water and placed 5 tea bags in it. I brought the water to boil and then soaked the onsie for about 30 minutes. I let it dry and then ran it through the wash/dryer.

To make the ‘1’ I started by ironing a “Iron on” paper to the fabric to make it stiffer and easier to work with (I for the life of me can’t remember to correct name of this paper, I just used what I had on hand. You could also use a fusible web paper).

I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut a ‘1’ out of the fabric using American Typewriter font.

Next, I pinned the ‘1’ onto the onsie and used the stitch setting above on my sewing machine to secure it to the onsie. Done!

Now onto my little secret. Here is how I make all of my fabric and ribbon flowers. For some reason I really struggle with making flowers (we all have our issues, right?) so I was pretty excited when I came across this little tool at my local craft store.

Cosmo Cricket makes these little sticky circles called Glubers that help you make easy fabric and ribbon flowers. Genius.

All you have to do is peel off one side, place one end of the ribbon onto the sticky circle and start twisting your ribbon around in a circular motion until the whole circle is filled. Then peel the other plastic sheet off and stick ’em to your project! The only downside is that they only come in one size so if you want the flowers to vary in size you’ll have to cut them or create a bigger size on your own.

I used this same tool with all of the flowers shown here and here.  Now you don’t have an excuse for not trying to make little flowers for your next project!

I will caution you though, these do NOT hold up in the wash ( learned that the hard way). I suggest only using them on home decor projects or projects you won’t wash :)

Shabby Chic Birthday

Baby E loved her outfit, she was definitely a princess at her party!

Oh what a beautiful little girl! I love how you embellished the onsie so adorable. Did you make the skirt and leggings also? I am sharing this with my daughter she just found out she’s expecting & I’m hoping for another girl. Thanks so much for sharing this and for stopping by my blog and leaving kind words. I’m a new follower.

What a beautiful outfit for your beautiful little girl! Makes me wish I had a baby already so I could dress her up. :)

Good tip about the sticky circles–I have a hard time getting those flowers to hold sometimes, and a sticky circle would be a great solution!

Thanks for your nice comments on my blog! :)
