DIY Hanging Wood Planters

We are smack in the middler of summer around here and I’m still working on some new outdoor projects! There really is nothing better than being outside on a sunny day, watching the kids play in the yard and working on some DIY projects.

I’ve shared our outdoor living space numerous times on the blog, but I’ve never shown pics from the outside looking in! We have a set of privacy walls on either side of the porch, from the inside looking out they are great and create much needed privacy but from the outside they can be a little bare. I wanted to create a visually appealing element to them so I teamed up with ScotchBlue to create some DIY Hanging Wood Planters.
If you don’t have a privacy wall like ours, these would also look super cute hanging off a fence or a lattice.

When coming up with an idea for this space, I knew I wanted to include greenery and wood elements and also wanted something that captured the style of our home. These modern geometric blocks were the perfect fit.

This project can be personalized in so many different ways, choose your stain, choose your paint color and even your patterns.

I’m super happy with how they turned out, I think they add so much character to our privacy fence and an be reused every year!

SUPPLIES

 

 

ScotchBlue Exterior Surface Tape

4”X4”8’ Fence Post

1” Spade Bit

Power Drill

1 Quart Semi-Transparent Exterior Stain

White Paint

Wood Sealer

Deck Eyes

3 ½” S Hooks

Succulents

TUTORIAL

Step 1: Cut your 4” X 4” X 8’ fence post into pieces ranging in size from 5-7”.

Step 2: Use 120 grit sandpaper to smooth out the edges.

Step 3: To create the hole in the wood, use a 1” (or 1 ½”) spade bit. I found that the 1” spade bit was faster and easier to use, but the 1 ½ will give you a bigger hole for plants. When drilling into the wood, set your drill on a high speed and press gently.

Step 4: Apply two coats of exterior semi-transparent stain to the wood blocks.

Step 5: Using the ScotchBlue Exterior Surfaces Painters Tape, tape off a variety of geometric patterns on the wood blocks. The ScotchBlue Exterior Surfaces Painters Tape is perfect for use on stained surfaces.

Step 6: Apply two coats of white paint.

Step 7: Once the paint is dry, gently remove the tape and reveal your fun patterns.

Step 8: Seal the paint with a polyacrylic. This will help protect the wood.

Step 9: To hang the planters, screw a deck eye onto the wood and then use an “S hook” to hang them on the wall. I used 3 ½” ‘s hooks’ with a 1.2” opening.

Then fill them with succulents!

These added such a dramatic look to our privacy wall on our outdoor space. I feel like it really dressed it up and looks visually appealing from the outside looking in.
